Talk about ANYTHING

So for years I tried to get into the 'indie' scene, after hearing so many people talk about how good all these bands were.
All I learned was that I can't stand Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists and the like. However, I really really enjoy The Thermals.
I'm more of a traditional rock guy when all is said and done. Nothing too metal, nothing too soft.
That being said, this was a banner year for all the bands I truly dig. Breaking Benjamin, Skindred, and Dethklok (an exception that creates the rule) outdid themselves.
My MP3 player is just a half gig of angry music, because nobody wants to listen to a Waltz when they're on their 4th mile or sprinting for time.
Also, I bought an album a few year ago and for some reason really didn't get into it. A few months ago I tossed it in, and have absolutely no idea how I missed it.
So if you've never heard of The Exies, do yourself a favor and grab a few songs. You can't go wrong.
Suffer with me, will you?

I forgot to add a pertinent one - Rob Zombie.

I saw him live not too long ago and he was phenomenal. Been a big Zombie kick since then. And I have to say that while I generally do not enjoy remixed music, American Music to Strip By is an awesome album.

Im big into rock myself, pretty much the whole spectrum, old to new, emo to black metal, indie to grindcore , i can find something to like in almost any band. i checked out most of the links on this thread, U.K were pretty awesome, really like the bass work, very Geddy Lee like, and as you pointed out the electric violin was a nice touch, was already into Godspeed, so i agreed wholeheartedly with your sentiments 4, however Wolf Eyes was a bit much for me, lol, i enjoy sunn0))), but wolf eyes had a few too many high frequencies for my fragile ears to endure, lol

heres what iv been listening to recently, alot of it is bands iv seen recently or am going to see soon, ill provide a couple of links to youtube for anyone whos curious

Alice In Chains- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3FnQMSD4Zg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8a7sCkGFD6A

Shadows Fall- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAYbRHCFOEo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xa54bf-0K7Q

Poison The Well- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaDgnRmKR3A http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqRDpWmmrBM

Glassjaw- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eghgAnlhPGw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkhC4kx-eno

Thrice- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2_DWUEIGC4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_CuTlYd2ng

Frank Turner- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQMVHhxTtLc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaLmmE2h ... re=related

Led Zep- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pau8Zf7srlU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iP9xMobANJM

Deep Purple- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAZyjARWKzM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHlODWd4GeM

Isis- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWTAkBRe6aI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8HZ_gjj ... re=related

Converge- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYj7uMWJ3ro http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Go8KMq_WjLI

Planes Mistaken For Stars http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPYokmL9VxE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuX_ujiM ... re=related , if someone forced me to pick a favourite band ever (which is something im not a fan of doing in all honesty) it would probably be these guys. they broke up a couple of years ago put on 2 of the best gigs iv ever been to, their music is really listenable whilst being intense as fuck all at the same time, i imagine their faster songs would be good for work outs (not that i'd know, lol im a lazy bastard) the links iv provided are off the 2 newest albums, their older stuff is a little more chilled but still awesome

hahaha i commend you solely for giving them a shot. whether it was your cup of tea or not, i'm sure you could see how experiencing them live is unlike anything else. sunn0))) is also good, but a different set of noise. kudos for already being into godspeed. though they've been dead for years, they gain more and more recognition as time goes on, and hopefully this will lead to them getting back together again. they did say they were only taking a break...but god that was forever ago, and they're too busy being split up into other more well known acts like do make say think and silver mt zion.

planes mistaken for stars are also fantastic, and i definitely give them a recommendation. now isis is the only metal band i even keep up with anymore since high school. when i heard oceanic, i knew i had stumbled upon what must be the greatest metal album of all time. very powerful and moving...more instrumental than metal, the vocals come in at the right time to really push the climaxes. that is a band that every metal fan here has to check out. their last album was really good too. hall of the dead had me completely mesmerized. here's the opening track from oceanic if you guys are interested in hearing more isis http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Qz8e7pgy_Y

Deep Purple is genius. Everybody I know thinks the only Deep Purple song is Smoke on the Water, but they are sorely mistaken. Deep Purple has loads of awesome songs that they have no idea.

Scrub Club has some new music up. It's a pretty good mix of chiptunes and nerdcore.

BTW, anybody going to Blipfest tonight or tomorrow?

I respectfully disagree, Pappy. I saw Mastodon in October and they were great live.

oceanic is such a good album, i linked 2 songs off of panopticon cos i thought it'd be the "easiest" stuff to listen to, iv got a remixes of oceanic album and the "false light" remix is fucking mind blowing, could listen to it for days straight. i dont have the new album yet, didnt realise it had come out in all honesty, i had a little spurt of new album knowledge about a month ago, and get the new converge, poison the well, slayer and alice in chains albums, and thats basically all the new stuff iv gotten a hold of this year :s pretty bad form really, i figured either sunn0))) or aphex twin would be the closest resemblence to wolf ears, obviously sunn0))) are kinda opposite ends of the scale from them as far as frequency abuse goes, but iv always been a fan of my low end , you a fan of cult of luna at all? i always saw them as a european equivelent to isis, love them as well

good to see someone who knows and likes planes, iv got alot of love for those guys
