Prometheus

Opinion on this movie seems to be a bit divisive to say the least. I liked it! What about everyone else?

I also liked this film. I'm glad they kept with the Alien style of weponizing sex, because it just made everything that much creepier and dreadful. Granted, I wasn't happy with some the writing, specifically the biologist who was about as smart as the Grizzly Man. Seriously, you're on an alien world, with alien creatures, YOU CAN'T ASSUME THEY ACT LIKE EARTH CREATURES!

Also, side note, one of the characters was named Dr. Shaw. Wasn't Shaw the guy in Alien that got ALL the rape metaphors?

I loved it. I'm planning to write a much more in-depth review for my Drunk Monkeys column, but there was just so much about that movie that was done well.

It's definitely going to be the bleakest big movie of the summer. No doubt about that.

I was a fan. I may e a bit more cynical with a rewatch, but I was far too busy greatly enjoying the scenery and the overarching plot on the first viewing. Everyone who disliked it seems to have had a serious problem with the fact that some questions weren't answered. How much gratification do you need these days? I'm glad they didn't spell out everything, especially the origin stuff like why/how/huh?

My biggest problem with the movie was the last shot of the Alien busting out of the dudes chest. I don't mind having it there for the fan service but it felt like it just went on way way too long.

I also have gripes with the script, or at least how things played out in the movie. There were some story points that were either executed a little sloppy or were just breezed by too fast.

But overall I really liked it. It was the type of movie that I feel like I haven't seen in ages. It had some cool monsters, some good characters and just some good, freaky shit that I don't feel like we get a lot of these days.

From my perspective it seems a lot of haters are stuck on the Alien connection. I walked into this movie not even expecting to see a single Alien and could have done without the one that I did see. A lot of people seem to be picking apart why the movie does a disservice to the Aliens franchise and how certain plot points don't line up with things in Alien or Aliens. I wasn't expecting anything beyond the vaguest of connections, though I also don't have as strong an attachment to the franchise as some folks.

Either way, I thought it was a great time.

I'm about the same as everyone here, but I do want to note that a lot of the dissenting reviews that I've read have more to do with plot holes/story goofs/problems with continuity than connection to the franchise itself.

Usually I can clearly see a rift between my feelings and the other side, but I think this is one of those cases where I was willing to let go of certain dumb moves (and we can all admit there were dumb moves) and be swept up in the characters and gorgeous gorgeousness. I can go down a list of gripes and think "Yup. Yup. Oh yeah. No I don't know why they approved that make-up," etc. and still really enjoy what I got to see. And like Tim said, there was a lot of freaky shit I don't get to see much of at all these days.

I stand behind my assertion that this movie was a throwback. When was the last time you saw a summer blockbuster that was willing to let the audience soak up the atmosphere and plot without offering any kind of action for the first half? That's how you build a tense, thoughtful film, no matter how violent the second half is. It really felt that, graphics aside, it was made two or three years after Alien.
