Silent Horror DVD

Discuss X-strike Studios current and future releases along with any and all side projects

I wholeheartedly appreciate the negativity of your review. Seriously. Negative feedback, especially when tactfully stated, means almost more to me than positive.

I'm very happy to hear that Snake and P.Rappa out-do Silent Horror in your eyes: it means we are learning, and that continued education and growth is visible in our work. This is evident even within Silent Horror. The ending was the last scene we shot, and arguably the best scene in the movie from a technical perspective (it also benefited from the introduction of a steadicam into our video aresenal). Compare that to the deleted scene where-in Steve and Sara travel to the hospital, and that growth becomes even more evident. If every project we undertake doesn't surpass a previous in some way or another, then what have we really accomplished? I'm glad to hear that as a unit we are maturing, and also glad everyone seems to love Nth Mile as much as I do.

I'm past the point of making excuses for the flaws in Silent Horror. Something you create should speak for itself; you shouldn't have to stand beside it every time someone watches it and provide annotations for why everything is the way it is (Oh, our light was dying here, or Oh, we WERE going to have a really impressive action sequence here...etc). IF you are doing that then you are holding on to the idea of what you wanted to create instead of embracing what you actually created.

If nothing else, I'll encourage you to check out the Production Commentary track with Joecam, Tim, and myself. You may get a kick out of us pointing out our own mistakes, making excuses, defending certain actresses performances in the name of diplomacy, and possibly even pointing out flaws you may have missed.

Again, thanks for an honest review.

I would have to say it was a good movie. Nice jokes, good actors, blah blah blah. I will say that some of the monsters were a little bit lacking but I can understand how hard it is to make monsters like the ones in Silent Hill. Also, there didn't seem like there were too many monsters. For an entire town of people to be turned to monsters, there only seemed to be like 7 of them. Again, I can see how this could be hard to do. Anyway, I believed it to be a good rounded movie overall and hope that Resident Horror comes out soon.

P.S. I really hope Ben got a nice sword for Christmas.

Ha! Well, just be careful next time. Especially with Sidequest. Fighter isn't a fighter without his swords. (Sword-chucks)

Rich got me a sword before Tim did, and Rich didn't even break something beforehand!

Rich loves me more than Tim does

Monsters!

Postby Diepotterdie on Tue Mar 07, 2006 10:00 am

I liked the low tech, bloody sheets, rusty garden tools feel of the monsters in silent horror. I thought they did the best job they could have given the budget. My favorite was the black, spinning, axe stealing, static screeching monster in the woods.

The only monsters that seemed lacking at all were the ones that were done as a joke, like the hand puppet and the zombies in school. They were supposed to be lacking, that was the joke.

The only drawback of the movie, as I saw it, was that the sound was a little off in a few of the talky scenes, but it was never so bad that I couldn't understand what they were saying.

You understood Claire even with the echoing whispers?

Yeah, it wasn't too bad. The echos were about the only problem, but they weren't so bad that you couldn't understand what was being said.

The black axe stealing screechy monster, aka Poutie Whale to us, is about my least favorite, because I know what i wanted it to be originally. I like the "rusty garden tools feel" description though. Very apt, and exactly what i was hoping for.

Poutie Whale?

Postby Diepotterdie on Fri Mar 10, 2006 3:17 pm

I liked the forest monster (Poutie Whale?) because it was very strange and different. No visible eyes, inhuman movement, and a screeching static filled voice made it a very memorable monster. I have no idea what you had in mind originally, but I liked it a lot.

The jerky, strange movements the monsters made in the movie added to the 'Silent Hill' feel, and I thought it worked very well. The monsters were monstrous not only because of the way they looked, but the way they acted as well. Case in point: the nurse with the black hair in the well lit corridor. She looked like a sick hooker, but she acted and moved like something right out of a nightmare.

The first time I watched the Claire scene I understood most of her dialog. The only lines I had to rewatch to understand was 'You're quite the rude one.' and 'You're better off lost.'

By the way, in one of the commentaries, it's mentioned that there was a scary scene cut out when Briggs grabs the girl by the shoulder, just as they're walking into the woods, about to fight Pouti Whale. Will we ever get the chance to see this? Why was it cut?

Well I think I know what you're talking about

There was a small bit cut before they entered the woods where Lea has another quick hallucination where she sees a monster where Mark is standing but it was cut, I think because it wasn't shot properly to make sense in the context of the scene.
