I have some more thoughts on the new Horde after todays play. In general I feel much more positive about the changes they made than after the first attempt last week and I think the map/base choice definitely made a big difference. Our base on Oldtown was definitely not the best. Too open with two barricades and a single turret. Today on Thrashball we had a relatively enclosed space with SIX barriers and THREE turrets. Huge difference. I think it also really helped the money by instituting the general rule of not upgrading the barriers past level 2. I just don't think the laser gates are worth it when the larger enemies are going to walk right through them anyway. I can also see how over time your accrued experience with upgrading the base defenses will make a big difference since they're permanent, particularly when once you start getting discounts on the purchasing.

Berserker boss waves fucking suck. Even the Lambent Berzerker wasn't that bad but having to deal with three fucking Berzerkers at once? So the bullshit.

Also no wenches, no bloodmounts and no armored cactus in todays horde. Lots of Plumbers though. I do really appreciate how varied the waves are now. You never can know what to expect.

Wave 50 actually felt like an epic boss battle to me. Even though we had taken Brumaks before, there was something about this time that made it feel epic.

I think it was the tension of it being our first wave 50 and knowing how fucked we would be if we screwed it up.

The epicness of facing off that Brumak and managing to kill it felt like an epic end to a fantastic journey that was the 50 wave triumph. I couldn't have asked for a better wave 50. It'll be hard to top that one. Looking forward to the next Horde sesh, hopefully we can get them on a bit more frequently. Also you know what could be cool? If we could somehow get a LAN horde run going at MAGfest...

Has anyone else bought the season pass? Anyone thinking about it? I haven't gone in for it yet but I'm definitely thinking about it. I just kinda wish they'd be clearer as to what the content is going to be.

I haven't bought the pass. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, considering if you planning on getting all the DLC anyway, it's a solid purchase. It's just really difficult to get DLC where I'm going.

I was planning on getting it if others are, for the extra horde maps. By the sounds of it its the same as the all fronts collection from gears 2. 4 lots of dlc, with some confirmed campaign extras is what I heard.

It just prepays you for all the DLC that's coming out over the next year while saving you $10. Its just a tough sell at $40, even if its probably worth it for us in the end. I'll probably at least wait until I've seen what's in the November DLC and until we've exhausted the maps that were included on disc.

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/gears ... ive-nov-1/

Gears of War 3's first DLC pack, "Horde Command," will enter the fray on November 1. Available for 800 MSP ($10), or through the game's "season pass," the DLC includes three new maps, a few characters (Onyx Guard, Big Rig Dizzy, Bernie), weapon skins and, most exciting, new fortifications for Horde mode.

The new fortifications include a command center that allows players to call in support from snipers, mortars or Hammers of Dawn. A decoy upgrade that can create a fighting Onyx Guard bot, a sentry upgrade that adds a fire bolt for more damage and is really helpful against berserkers, and a Silverback upgrade with rockets and repair cost reduction.

Well shit....those new fortifications would be nice.

Yeah I just read that. Also I didn't realize it was $30 not $40. I'll probably be forking over the cash as soon as I have it to spare.

Next DLC is already being detailed.

Its a campaign chapter set before Gears 1 where you play as a COG squad that includes Kim and Tai. Plus you get to play as General Raam. Some other assorted weapons skins and multiplayer characters as well. Its also priced at $15 which seems like quite a bit for content that they're saying will only be about 3 hours long. But if all the DLC packs are going to be $15 I have to say that Season Pass is well worth it.
