Which PS3 to buy?

Postby Penis Whiskers on Sun Apr 08, 2012 8:31 pm

With my 360 recently shitting the bed, and a newly-found source of pretty decent income, I've been toying with the notion of finally picking up a PS3. The free online service, coupled with the blu-ray player are really what are sort of motivating me as I have used my consoles more for watching movies as of late than I have for gaming. That said, I'd still like the ability to be able to occasionally play some games, so my question to those of you with more knowledge on the subject: which version should I pick up. I managed to get by with a 4GB 360 for almost 4 years before I filled up the hard drive, to give you an idea of the amount of gaming I actually do. If I'm not mistaken, though, the PS3 requires you to download entire games onto your drive which would obviously eat up a lot more space. I know there have been many iterations of this console since its debut nearly 6 years ago, each with its own pros and cons, but I'm wondering what the best one for me is as someone who casually games and watches a lot of Netflix/Hulu and DVDs.

A quick look on Amazon makes me think that the cheapest bet is a 160GB model. It's one of the "Slim" models, and it's currently the smallest hard drive of the current batch. The first gen ones had 20gb, 60gb and 80gb hard drives, and have backward compatibility with PSX/PS2 games. However, they're no long made, and are fetching a high price. If you can grab one of those that work, and are less than $250, that should do the trick for you. Of course, the differences between 160 and 320Gb looks between $30-50.

Just get the cheapest slim PS3 that you can find. I bought a 120GB when they first came out and it's not even close to full, and I more or less use my PS3 for the same purposes you're going to since the bulk of my gaming is done on 360.
I'm out like the gout.

So I ended up going with a 250GB model, only because the price diff between that and the 160GB was $10. I'll never use all that space, but it was $10. The prices online were the same as GameStop in store, and the shipping/tax are about a wash, so the evil corporation got some of my money. First time in about 5 years I've bought anything from them.
